Best used hybrid hatchbacks for low running costs

The Yaris Hybrid has been quietly reliable since the third-generation car arrived in 2012, and the current Mk4, on sale since 2020, sharpened everything up. Toyota's self-charging hybrid system needs no home charger and rarely troubles owners with major faults. Real-world economy sits around 60-65 mpg in mixed driving, better if you're mostly in town where the electric motor does more of the work.

Used prices for a 2019-2021 Mk3 star...

One more point in its favour: every Yaris Hybrid comes with a CVT automatic gearbox as standard, which makes it a genuinely easy car to drive. If you're a new driver weighing up your first automatic, our roundup of the best automatic hatchbacks for new drivers puts the Yaris Hybrid's low-speed manners in context alongside its rivals.

No car did more to normalise hybrid technology than the Prius, and that early adoption means there's a huge range of used examples on the market. The Mk3 (2009-2015) can be found from around £4,000-£6,000, while the sleeker Mk4 (2016-2022) starts from about £9,000 and offers genuine 55-60 mpg in real-world use, or higher if you find a plug-in variant.

High-mileage examples aren't something to fear here. Prius taxis routinely cover 200,0...

If you want to see how far the model has moved on, Toyota's current Prius range shows just how much more efficient and quicker the latest plug-in hybrid has become, which helps explain why early used examples are priced so accessibly.

The Jazz has always punched above its size for interior space, and the current e:HEV hybrid version, sold since 2020, adds Honda's clever two-motor hybrid system on top. Unlike some rivals, Honda's setup can run on electric power alone more often, which helps around town where a hybrid should feel most at home. Expect around 55-60 mpg in mixed driving.

Used prices start from roughly £14,000 for an early low-mileage example, rising to £18,000-£20,000 for a nearly new car. That's a premium over the Yaris, but the Jazz's Magic Seats and boxy shape give it genuinely useful load space that small hatchbacks often lack.

Pros: class-leading practicality, smooth and quiet hybrid system, strong safety ratings.

Cons: higher used prices than rivals, styling is more sensible than exciting.

If boot space and family use are priorities, it's worth comparing the Jazz against used small SUVs before deciding.

Renault's E-Tech hybrid system arrived on the Clio in 2020 and works differently to Toyota and Honda's approach, using a clutchless gearbox and a bigger battery to allow more electric-only driving at low speeds. The result is claimed economy in the 60-65 mpg range, though we'd treat the top end of that as an optimistic motorway figure rather than a daily guarantee.

Being a newer entrant to the hybrid hatchback market, used Clio E-Tech prices reflect that: expect to pay from around £13,000 for an early 2021 car, rising past £16,000 for a low-mileage 2022-2023 example. Reliability data is still building compared with Toyota's decades of hybrid experience, so a thorough service history check matters more here.

Pros: genuinely good to drive, competitive economy, stylish cabin for the class.

Cons: shorter hybrid track record, dealer network smaller than Toyota's for specialist repairs.

If you want hybrid economy with a more upmarket cabin, the Lexus CT200h is worth seeking out. Built on Toyota Prius mechanicals but wrapped in a sharper, more premium body, it launched in 2011 and stayed in production until 2018. That shared drivetrain means the same reputation for hybrid battery longevity applies here too.

Used values are the story: because the CT never sold in huge numbers, you can find well-kept examples from around £7,000-£9,000, occasionally less for higher-mileage cars. That's a lot of badge and interior quality for hybrid hatchback money. Economy sits around 50-55 mpg in real-world driving, slightly behind the Prius due to the CT's sportier tuning and additional weight from its trim.

Pros: genuine premium interior, Toyota-level hybrid reliability, strong depreciation already absorbed by the first owner.

Cons: firmer ride than a standard Prius, CVT transmission drone under hard acceleration, smaller boot than most rivals here.

Worth cross-shopping against other used premium hatchbacks if badge appeal matters to you.

Budget dictates a lot here. Under £10,000, the Toyota Prius and Lexus CT200h are your realistic options, both offering the reassurance of Toyota's hybrid engineering underneath. Between £11,000 and £15,000, the Yaris Hybrid and Clio E-Tech compete directly, with the Toyota edging it on long-term reliability and the Renault edging it on driving enjoyment. If space is non-negotiable, the Jazz Hybrid justifies its higher asking price with a genuinely bigger boot and more flexible rear seats.

Whatever you choose, get an independent inspection before handing over money, particularly on cars over eight years old. A hybrid battery replacement isn't the disaster it once was, with independent specialists now often quoting far less than main dealer prices, but it's still a cost worth budgeting against. Ask for a full service history and check for any hybrid system warning lights during a test drive.

Running costs beyond fuel also favour hybrids. Road tax on most used hybrid hatchbacks from this list sits in a low band, and insurance groups for the Yaris, Jazz and Clio typically start in the young-driver-friendly teens.
